Due to recent changes in California consumer protection laws (AB-506) that strictly prohibit breeders from accepting non-refundable holding fees from residents, Kaiju Kennels is implementing a necessary update to our placement policies. Moving forward, while California residents are still entirely welcome to join our waitlist and submit an application when a new litter is born, we will no longer be able to take deposits to hold a puppy for buyers residing in the state. This means priority placement will go to applicants who are able to commit to one of our puppies with a deposit.
We will still consider placing puppies with California residents whom we already know personally and trust deeply enough to proceed without a deposit. Additionally, we will continue to consider Californians for placements that do not require a hold, such as an older puppy or adult dog that is available immediately. This policy change only affects the holding of puppies under 12 weeks of age.
As a small preservation program, our holding fees are a vital tool for ensuring true buyer commitment. If an applicant capriciously backs out when the puppies are already 6 weeks old, it forces us to scramble to carefully evaluate and find a new, perfectly matched home at the last minute. This creates an unfair and highly stressful situation for both our puppies and our program. Because California law now dictates that any deposit or holding fee must be fully refundable if a buyer simply changes their mind, we cannot risk the instability it introduces to our carefully planned litters.
We are incredibly sorry for the disappointment this may cause our many wonderful California supporters, but we must make decisions that best protect the dogs we work so hard to raise. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our breeding goals.
